Life: Contributions to Support Syrian Cultural Entities

Life programme was specially launched by Ettijahat – Independent Culture to be part of Ettijahat's tenth anniversary programming. The programme targets entities and collectives active in the Syrian arts sector, as well as civil and media entities whose work revolves around the arts, which have played a central role in building relationships with arts creators and audiences in their respective locations during the last decade.

The past decade in the Arab region, including Syria, was heavy with reconnection to the past, present and future. Art entities were present, aiming to contribute to democratic change, either on the ground and with people or through digital platforms that sought to provide an alternative to restricted public spaces. These entities contributed to formulating questions of freedom, openness, and creativity, and sought to create intellectual platforms for research and imagination. They also contributed to the formulation of the present and future, petitioned for public and individual rights, and promoted counter-narratives to patriarchy, stereotyping, and exclusion based on ethnicity or gender identity. Today, there is a greater need for these entities, which operate in an environment where security, economic, and health challenges have accumulated.
